McLaren MCL32

McLaren's first car without the MP4 name since 1980, undone by an ambitious but fragile Honda engine.

About the McLaren MCL32

Originally known as the MP4-32, the MCL32 was the first McLaren since the M30 not to carry the MP4 prefix, a change made after Ron Dennis left the McLaren Technology Group. Honda's new RA617H power unit adopted a layout modelled on Mercedes' design, a choice Honda's Yusuke Hasegawa described as very high risk, and it proved slow and unreliable. McLaren managed only 425 laps in pre-season testing, Fernando Alonso retired from the first two races, and the team did not score until Alonso's ninth place in Azerbaijan. Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne ended the year with 30 points and ninth in the Constructors' Championship, and McLaren switched to Renault engines for 2018.
