About the Chevrolet Astro

Launched in 1985 to compete with Chrysler's minivans, the Chevrolet Astro utilised a rugged body-on-frame construction derived from GM's light trucks. Unlike its front-wheel-drive competitors, the Astro offered significant towing capacity and a durable rear-wheel-drive layout, making it a favourite for both tradesmen and large families. The 4.3-litre Vortec V6, essentially a small-block V8 with two cylinders removed, provided class-leading torque for the era. Today, early first-generation models are gaining a cult following among enthusiasts for their boxy 80s styling and conversion potential.

Chevrolet Astro fun facts

  • The Astro's 4.3-litre V6 was so closely related to the 350 cubic-inch V8 that it shared the same bore and stroke dimensions.
  • Despite its van classification, the Astro was frequently used as a base for 'conversion vans' featuring plush velvet interiors and high-top roofs.
  • The Astro remained in production for 20 years across only two generations, finally ending its run in 2005.
