About the Alfa Romeo 158 Alfetta
Developed under Gioachino Colombo for the 1.5-litre voiturette class, the 158 took its name from its 1.5-litre, eight-cylinder engine and won on its debut at the 1938 Coppa Ciano Junior with Emilio Villoresi. Its supercharged straight-eight grew from around 200 bhp at first to about 350 bhp by 1950, and after the war Jean-Pierre Wimille, Achille Varzi and Carlo Felice Trossi won a string of major Grands Prix with it between 1946 and 1948. The rules introduced in 1947 for the new Formula One allowed 1.5-litre supercharged engines, so the pre-war design remained eligible. In 1950, the first World Championship season, Alfa Romeo won all six championship Grands Prix it entered, three each for Giuseppe Farina and Juan Manuel Fangio, and Farina took the title.
