About the Williams FW18
The FW18 developed the FW17 under new cockpit protection rules for 1996, with the drivers sitting lower to bring down the centre of gravity, and used Renault's 3.0-litre RS8 V10. Damon Hill covered more than 9,000 km in pre-season testing, and the car proved balanced, comfortable and responsive to set-up changes. It finished first and second on its debut in Australia and won 12 of the 16 races, eight for Hill and four for rookie Jacques Villeneuve, with Hill qualifying on the front row at every race. Williams clinched the Constructors' title in Hungary with four rounds to spare, and Hill won the drivers' title at Suzuka even though the team had already decided not to keep him for 1997.
