About the Williams FW11
Designed by Frank Dernie under technical director Patrick Head around Honda's 1.5-litre RA166E turbo V6, the FW11 won first time out with Nelson Piquet in Brazil in 1986. Strong aerodynamics and an engine that was both powerful and economical gave Williams nine wins and the Constructors' Championship. Team owner Frank Williams was left quadriplegic by a road accident and did not appear in the pits until the British Grand Prix, so Patrick Head ran the team. Nigel Mansell and Piquet took points from each other, and Mansell's spectacular tyre failure in the Australian finale handed the drivers' title to Alain Prost.
