About the Ferrari 641
Developed from the 640 and overseen by Steve Nichols after John Barnard left, the 641 kept the semi-automatic gearbox proven in 1989 and used a 3.5-litre V12 rated at 680 bhp, slightly down on McLaren's Honda V10. It was among the best-handling cars on the grid, and reigning champion Alain Prost, who called it the best car of the year, won five races, including from 13th on the grid in Mexico, while Nigel Mansell won once. At Silverstone Prost persuaded the team to give him Mansell's chassis, which he felt was better, and won with it. The title fight ended when Ayrton Senna collided with Prost at the first corner in Japan, leaving Prost runner-up.
