About the Ferrari 500 F2

After Alfa Romeo withdrew, the FIA ran the 1952 and 1953 World Championships to Formula Two rules, and Ferrari was the only team with a car designed specifically for the new formula. Aurelio Lampredi's 500 used a 1,985 cc inline-four mounted behind the front axle to improve weight distribution, with a de Dion rear axle and a four-speed transaxle. Alberto Ascari won every championship race he started in the 500 in 1952 to take his first title, and Ferrari also won the one round he missed while racing at Indianapolis. He took a second title in 1953, and in all the 500 won 14 of its 19 World Championship races. For 1954 several chassis were converted with the 2.5-litre 625 engine and won again.
