About the Ferrari 246 F1
Built for 1958, when Formula One switched from alcohol fuels to aviation petrol, the 246 F1 paired a conventional front-engined chassis with the 2,417 cc Dino V6, the first V6 used in a Formula One car. It produced 280 hp at 8,500 rpm and drove through a four-speed gearbox. Mike Hawthorn won the 1958 Drivers' Championship with it, and Ferrari finished second in the Constructors' Championship. The enlarged 256 F1 of 1959 added disc brakes and a five-speed gearbox, and Tony Brooks won the French and German Grands Prix with it, though he was outpaced by the mid-engined British cars. Its final win came at the 1960 Italian Grand Prix at Monza, which the major British teams boycotted.
