About the Mercedes-Benz Vito W638

The W638 Mercedes-Benz Vito, launched in 1996, marked the brand's entry into the modern mid-size LCV market, notably featuring a front-wheel-drive layout to maximise interior space. The 110 CDI trim, introduced during the 1999 facelift, replaced the older indirect-injection diesel engines with the more efficient OM611 common-rail unit. While primarily a commercial vehicle, its car-like dashboard and independent suspension provided a level of refinement that challenged contemporary rivals like the Volkswagen Transporter. Today, it is remembered as a durable workhorse, though early models are increasingly rare due to heavy commercial use and corrosion issues.
