About the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren
A collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and McLaren, the SLR was designed to be a modern homage to the 1955 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé. Built at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, it features a full carbon-fibre monocoque and unique front-mid-engine packaging, with the supercharged V8 pushed far behind the front axle. While its five-speed torque-converter automatic and grand touring focus initially drew criticism compared to the Ferrari Enzo, its brutal straight-line performance and iconic side-exit exhausts have cemented its status as a collector favourite. It remains one of the most distinctive supercars of its era, offering a visceral, muscle-car-like experience with high-speed stability.

Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren fun facts
- The SLR features an active rear spoiler that doubles as an airbrake, popping up to a 65-degree angle under heavy braking to increase rear downforce and stability.
- Because of the car's flat-bottom aerodynamics, there was no room for a traditional rear exhaust, leading to the signature side-exit pipes behind the front wheels.
- It was the first series-production car to feature a front crash structure made entirely of carbon fibre, designed to absorb energy in a similar way to a Formula 1 car.
