About the Matra Murena

The Matra Murena was a forward-thinking successor to the Bagheera, designed to address its predecessor's rust issues with a pioneering hot-dip galvanised chassis. Its sleek wedge profile, crafted by Antonis Volanis, achieved a remarkably low drag coefficient of 0.32, while the fibreglass body panels ensured longevity. The 2.2-litre model utilised the 'Type 180' engine from the Talbot Tagora, providing a significant performance boost over the base 1.6. Inside, it retained the signature three-abreast seating, making it one of the most practical mid-engined sports cars of its era.

Matra Murena fun facts

  • The Murena was the world's first production car to feature a chassis that was entirely hot-dip galvanised to prevent corrosion.
  • Production was cut short in 1983 because Renault, Matra's new partner, feared the Murena would compete with their own Alpine A310 and Fuego models.
  • The central seat back can be folded down to serve as a large armrest, a configuration many owners preferred for two-person touring.
